Why is 1st July celebrated as National Doctor’s Day?

Did you know why today, 1st July, is celebrated as National Doctor’s Day? It is in the honour of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, an Indian physician widely known for his extraordinary contributions in the field of medicine.

Born on 1st July 1882, Dr. B. C. Roy is known to have pioneered the founding of the Indian Medical Association in 1928, and also the Medical Council of India (MCI). He was also the first President of the Medical Council of India. Dr. B.C. Roy was conferred the Bharat Ratna Award on 4th February, 1961.

Dr. B. C. Roy also served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his demise in 1962, which also occurred on 1st July.

In 1952, the Bidhan Chandra Roy Award (B. C. Roy Award) was instituted by the Medical Council of India. It is presented every year on the 1st of July i.e. National Doctor’s Day in New Delhi by the President of India, and is the highest honour a doctor can receive in India!!

On this day, let us appreciate and be grateful to all our doctors and their noble service to humanity. Wishing all Doctors a Happy Doctor’s Day. We thank you for your effort and hardwork!! 🙏🌸
